Curry blanks softball, 6-0

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore 1B Alysia DiMuzio (Quincy, Mass.) was responsible for five runs and senior pitcher Kim Sturgis (Saugus, Mass.) tossed a three-hit shutout today to lead the visiting Curry College softball team past host Brandeis, 6-0, on Marcus Field.

Curry (19-11) was paced by DiMuzio, who went 4-4 with four RBI, two doubles and a run scored. She singled in the Colonels' first two runs in the first inning, then gave her squad a couple of insurance runs in the fifth with a two-run two-bagger. In the seventh inning, DiMuzio scored the game's final run after her second double of the contest.

Brandeis (14-14) dropped back to the .500 plateau with their third loss in a row. The Judges had two hits from junior RF Natalie Volpe (Southington, Conn.) and a single in the seventh from pinch hitter Kaitlin Streilein (Point Pleasant, N.J.). Those were the only runners the Judges could muster against Sturgis, who improved to 13-6 on the season with her fifth shutout of the campaign. She struck out six and did not walk a batter. Sturgis also went 3-4 with three runs scored at the plate.

Rookie Emily Vaillette (Milford, N.H.) fell to 3-4 on the campaign in the circle for Brandeis. She gave up 12 hits and six earned runs, walking three with no strikeouts.

The Judges are next in action Saturday against Bowdoin College in a 12 noon doubleheader, while Curry hosts Salve Regina tomorrow in 3:30 p.m. in a Commonwealth Coast Conference twin-bill.
