Softball slugs MIT, 14-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University softball team batted around in the first and fourth innings today as the Judges climbed back over the .500 mark with a 14-1 victory over MIT on Marcus Field.

Brandeis (12-11) wasted no time in jumping on Engineer rookie Priscilla Army (Pomfret, Conn.), as rookie SS Chelsea Korp (Worcester, Mass.) hit a two-run homer out of the No. 2 hole. The Judges took advantage of MIT errors to score four more unearned runs in the frame.

MIT (1-16) got one run back in the top of the second, when rookie 3B Chelsea Ostrander (Decatur, Ill.) led off with a double and scored two outs later on a grounder by rookie catcher Kasey Rowe (Eugene, Ore.).

Army stayed out of trouble in the Brandeis second and third innings, but junior pitcher Natalie Volpe (Southington, Conn.) went deep to lead off the fourth to open the floodgates. Senior Caitlin Lukacs (Sodus Point, N.Y.) had a two-run single in the frame, while junior pitcher Kaitlin Streilein (Point Pleasant, N.J.) connected for a grand slam, her fourth round-tripper of the season.

Eight Brandeis starters had hits, paced by Volpe, who was 3-4 with a home run, an RBI and two runs scored. Junior DP Danielle Mayer (Larkspur, Calif.) was 2-3 with a double and a run scored. Korp and Lukacs each had two RBI, while four different Judges crossed the plate twice. Volpe improved to 4-1 this season in the circle with six strikeouts and just the one earned run in a five-inning complete game.

MIT had three hits in the contest. In addition to Ostrander's double, junior 1B Holly Jeffrey (Wheaton, Ill.) and sophomore 2B Kaitlyn McCartney (Newton, Mass.) both singled. Army suffered the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season.

Brandeis is next in action tomorrow with two games against UMass-Boston starting at 3:00 p.m., while MIT is at Babson for a NEWMAC twinbill tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
