BRUNSWICK, Maine (courtesy Bowdoin sports info) - The Brandeis
University softball team pounded out 19 runs on 25 hits in a
doubleheader sweep of Bowdoin College on Sunday, 8-4 and 11-0. The
Judges improve to 33-8-1 this season while Bowdoin ends their year
with a record of 23-15.
The Judges wasted little time getting their offense going on
Sunday, as senior pitcher Kate Streilein (Point Pleasant, N.J.)
ripped a long homer to left field as the second batter of the game,
her seventh of the season. The Judges scored three more times in
the second inning on a Melisa Cagar (Ridgewood, N.J.) double. Cagar
would hit her third home run of the season later in the game and
Streilein was able to scatter seven hits and four runs to earn the
win in the circle for Brandeis. Molly Nestor accounted for all four
of Bowdoin runs, hitting a two-run homer in the third and slapping
a two-run double in the seventh. Karen Reni took the loss for the
Polar Bears.
A ten-run inning cut game two short, as Brandeis reached the
eight-run rule after five frames. A lengthy fifth frame saw the
Judges post a ten-spot, all coming on nine hits. The biggest blow
proved to be sophomore SS Chelsea Korp's (Worcester, Mass.) triple
to center field that scored two runs and pushed the lead to 5-0.
The game was a pitcher's duel for the first four innings, as senior
Natalie Volpe (Southington, Conn.) allowed just two hits in the
victory. Julia Jacobs was tagged with the loss for the Polar Bears.
