Late homer lifts Rochester softball past Brandeis, 1-0

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- University of Rochester junior pitcher Beth Ameno tossed a seven-hit shutout and hit the game-winning home run in the sixth inning today to lift the Yellowjackets past Brandeis University, 1-0, in University Athletic Association (UAA) action today.

Brandeis (3-2, 1-2 UAA) fell despite a fine performance from senior Kaitlin Streilein (Point Pleasant, N.J.), who allowed just four hits in her third complete game of the season. Rochester (6-4, 3-1 UAA) only had one inning with more than one base-runner and only two who advanced past first base.

In the first inning, UR had a runner on second with one out, and runners on first and second out later after a hit batter. Streilein induced a ground ball to second to get out unscathed. The 'Jackets had a two-out single in the third stranded there and a lead-off single in the fourth erased on a caught stealing. Their only other hit came on Ameno's two-out home run to left field in the sixth.

Brandeis had a couple of opportunities to score that they were unable to convert. In the fourth inning, sophomore Chelsea Korp (Worcester, Mass.) singled with one out, but was erased when she tried to steal second. Unfortunately for the Judges, Streilein followed with a triple to right, but got stranded on a come-backer to the mound. In the bottom of the sixth, after UR had scored their run, rookie CF Melissa Cagar (Ridgewood, N.J.) led off with a double. After Ameno got a strikeout, Korp singled to right to put runners at the corners with one away. Ameno escaped again, getting a foul pop to the catcher and a ground-out to escape the jam.

In addition to her game-winning home run, Ameno tossed a complete-game shutout. She struck out 10 and gave up just seven hits, walking one.
