SALEM, Mass. (courtesy SSC sports info) -- Brandeis University
completed a doubleheader sweep of the Lady Vikings, posting 7-1 and
12-6 victories this afternoon at Alumni Field. With the wins,
Brandeis extended its school-record winning streak to 22 games, one
shy of the University record for any team, set by the 1979 baseball
team. They also moved within one of the 1999 softball team's school
record for wins in a season, improving to 28-7-1 for the
season.
The Judges scored six runs over the first three innings en route to
their game one win. Senior Kate Streilein (Point Pleasant, N.J.)
posted a three-hit decision over the hosts, working five innings,
striking out four and did not issue a walk. Streilein also provided
the bulk of the offense for the visitors, going 3-for-4 with a pair
of doubles, a triple and four runs batted in.
Courtney Kelley (Leicester, Mass.) and Danielle Lavallee (Sutton,
Mass.) produced RBI doubles for the Judges in the opener. Sophomore
Erica Sonia (Lynn, Mass.) drove in SSC's lone run with a single.
Senior Sarah Funk (Newport News, Va.) sophomore Jess Baird
(Worcester, mass.) and freshman Taylor Orlando (Danvers, Mass.)
each collected a single for the Lady Vikings (18-18). SSC junior
Katelyn Doherty (Lynnfield, Mass.) gave up a dozen hits, seven
earned runs, struck out three and walked a pair.
The Judges sent 11 batters to the plate in the second inning of
game two en route to plating five runs. Melisa Cagar (Ridgewood,
N.J.) and Chelsea Korp (Worcester, Mass.) recorded back-to-back
two-run singles to highlight the frame. Korp would add a three-run
triple in the fifth. Erin Ross (Manalapan, N.J.) went 4-for-4 for
the winners with four singles and four runs scored.
Orlando went 2-for-3 with three RBI while teammates Amanda Scola
(Leominster, Mass.), Kara Beauregard (Leominster, Mass. ) and
Lauren Concannon (Chelmsford, Mass.) each added a pair of hits.
Sonia also stroked a triple. Michelle Enos (Methuen, Mass.) worked
the first two innings, giving up five earned runs and six hits.
