Softball holds Suffolk to four hits in 1-0 and 10-1 sweep

WALTHAM, Mass. – Three Brandeis University softball pitchers combined to allow just one unearned run and four hits over 12 innings of work today as the Judges swept a doubleheader from Suffolk University, 1-0 and 10-1. With the two wins, Brandeis improves to 12-7-1, while Suffolk falls to 8-13.

Brandeis and Suffolk played a pitchers duel in game one, with the only run coming in the second inning. Singles by senior pitcher Kaitlin Streilein (Point Pleasant, N.J.) and senior RF Natalie Volpe (Southington, Conn.) put runners on first and second with no one out. Ram junior Jess Ferreira (Cambridge, Mass.) got the next two outs on a pop up and strike out, but Brandeis junior Samantha Worth (Londonderry, N.H.), coming off an injury, singled up the middle in her first at-bat of the season to provide the game's only run.

Streilein took over from there. She allowed just two hits the rest of the way, striking out seven and walking just two with one hit batter. The Rams only had one runner past first base on an error and a bunt in the sixth inning, but Streilein worked out of the jam to improve to 7-3 on the season. She also went 2-3 at the plate with the game's only run scored, while Worth was 2-2 with a stolen base and the lone RBI.

Ferreira had a fine performance in the losing effort for Suffolk, scattering six hits over six innings of work, striking out three and walking one. The Rams' two hits came from junior catcher Ashley Gaboriualt (Sutton, Mass.) and sophomore CF Valerie Liberatore (Chelsea, Mass.).

In the night cap, the Judges wasted no time getting on the board, as six of the first seven batters reached base, plating five runs. Rookie 2B Melissa Cagar (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Courtney Kelley (Leicester, Mass.) led off with back-to-back doubles off Suffolk senior Jenna Mourey (Rochester, N.Y.) to open the scoring. Sophomore SS Chelsea Korp (Worcester, Mass.) followed with her first home run of the season to give the Judges a 3-0 lead. Volpe followed with a single, while sophomore catcher Erin Ross's (Manalapan, N.J.) RBI triple saw the Judges hit for the cycle in the first five batters of the game. Rookie 3B Danielle Lavallee (Sutton, Mass.) knocked in Ross, and the Judges took a 5-0 lead into the second.

Suffolk finally broke onto the scoreboard in the second, when Gaboriault drew a one-out walk. An error struck by sophomore DP Angela Cole (Plainville, Mass.) put runners on the corners, and the Rams scored their lone run on a successful double steal.

Brandeis added one more run in the second on a passed ball, while Cagar belted a grand slam to deep right field in the third as the Judges reached the eight-run margin to call the game early. Cagar finished the game going 2-3 with two runs scored and four RBI, a double and a home run.

Brandeis sophomore hurler Allie Mussen (Franklin Square, N.Y.) earned the win – her first decision of the season - with four innings of one-hit ball. She struck out two and walked two, allowing the unearned run. Classmate Emily Vaillette (Milford, N.H.) retired the side in the fifth to close out the game, also giving up one hit.

Suffolk's two safeties in game two came from the bats of Ferreira, playing shortstop, and Liberatore, who was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double to end the game. Mourey gave up 10 runs (eight earned) on 11 hits in the losing effort to fall to 3-6 on the campaign.
