BOSTON, MA (courtesy UMass-Boston sports info) – Brandeis University pitching allowed just four hits and junior outfielder Victoria Roomet (Jamaica, N.Y.) collected five hits and knocked in six runs to lead the softball team to a doubleheader sweep over host University of Massachusetts Boston today, winning the first game, 13-0, and the nightcap, 9-0, at the Clark Athletic Center Softball Field on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons fall to 3-16 on the season, while the Judges improve to 14-7-1. Both games were halted after five innings of play, due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Sophomore righty Emily Vaillette (Milford, N.H.) earned her first victory of the season for Brandeis in the opening game, going four innings, while allowing just two hits and no runs to go with five strikeouts. Sophomore Allie Mussen (Franklin Square, N.Y.) struck out the side to pitch a scoreless inning of relief for the Judges, while UMass Boston starter Courtney Haroules allowed 14 runs (12 earned) on 12 hits and 15 walks, while striking out eight in five innings of work.

Brandeis scored four times in the top of the first, highlighted by run scoring singles from senior RF Natalie Volpe (Southington, Conn.) and Roomet as well as a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman 1B Courtney Kelley (Leicester, Mass.). The Judges broke the game open with seven more runs in the second inning to take an 11-0 advantage, thanks to a two-run triple from freshman 2B Melisa Cagar (Ridgewood, N.J.) and a two-run single by sophomore C Erin Ross (Manalapan, N.J.). Senior DP Kate Streilein (Point Pleasant, N.J.) kicked off the frame’s scoring with an RBI triple for Brandeis.

The Judges tacked on a single run in the third when Roomet drew a bases loaded walk for the second time in as many innings to give them a 12-0 lead. Brandeis closed the scoring with two more runs in the top of the fifth, courtesy of an RBI walk by freshman RF Erin Thorn (Perkasie, Pa.) and a run-scoring single from junior 3B Samantha Worth (Londonderry, N.H.).

Worth finished the game going 3-5 with an RBI and a run scored for the Judges, while Roomet was 2-2 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Haroules and junior CF Jenn Widener each collected singles for the Beacons.

Mussen picked up the victory in game two for Brandeis, going three innings and allowing just two hits, while fanning three batters, before yielding to Volpe, who threw a pair of hitless frames, including two strikeouts. Haroules suffered the loss for UMass Boston, giving up nine runs on eight hits and seven walks, while setting down four batters on strikes.

The Judges scored four runs in the first inning, taking advantage of wild pitches and a UMB error, while getting an RBI single from Roomet. Brandeis added a run in the third when Roomet came through again with a bunt single to knock in another run to give the visitors a 5-0 margin. Run-scoring singles by Volpe, Roomet and sophomore LF Chelsea Korp (Worcester, Mass.) helped fuel a four-run fifth inning to put the game away for the Judges.

Roomet finished the second contest with three hits in as many at-bats and knocked in three runs, while scoring once for Brandeis. Korp and freshman 3B Danielle Lavallee (Sutton, Mass.) each registered two hits for the Judges, while Widener and junior third baseman Brittainy Knight each singled for the Beacons in game two.
