ALAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Washington University of St. Louis came up with three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning today as they squeaked past Brandeis University, 6-5, in University Athletic Association (UAA) action.

The Bears (5-4, 4-0 UAA) got off to a quick start in the bottom of the first inning with a single by right fielder Karli Stander (Paradise Valley, Ariz.). After a fielder's choice and a steal got her to third base, three more singles gave WashU a 3-0 lead.

Brandeis (3-3, 1-3 UAA) worked their way back in the top of the third inning. The first two batters got on and then two errors and a sacrifice fly by third baseman Danielle Levalee (Sutton, Mass.) gave Brandeis two runs in the third. The Judges came up with three more runs the next inning when right fielder Natalie Volpe (Southington, Conn.) doubled down the right field to lead off the inning. The next two batters singled to center and second baseman Melisa Cagar (Ridgewood, N.J.) doubled to center to put Brandeis on top, 5-3.

The fifth and sixth innings were pitching duels, with WashU pitchers giving up two hits and Brandeis pitcher Kate Streilein (Point Pleasant, N.J.) giving up just one. However, the bottom of the seventh proved rough for Streilein and after getting a fly out, the Bears hit a single and double. Sophomore Emily Vaillette (Milford, N.H.) then came on to pitch to WashU second baseman Kerry Krietman (Houston, Texas) who singled through the right side to tie the game. With two outs and the runner at third, the Bears' center fielder Amy Vukovich (Portland, Ore.) singled up the middle to win the game, 6-5.
