Softball back to the .500 mark on the season with a pair of wins over Lasell

Newton, Mass. - The Brandeis University softball team visited Lasell College for a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.  They won the first game, 3-2, and followed it up with an 8-3 victory in the second.  With these wins, the Judges climb to 7-7 overall while Lasell drops to 5-7 on the season.

In the first game, Lasell jumped out in front with a 2-0 lead after one inning.  That first inning consisted of two hits, an infield groundout to score a run and a stolen base for the second run of the inning.  Lasell's sophomore P Kirsten Mammola (North Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) held the Judges to no hits in the first three innings.

In the fourth inning, the Judges loaded the bases with a single to centerfield and back-to-back walks.  With the bases loaded, rookie pinch hitter Lara Hirschler (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) produced the game-winning, two-out, three-RBI double to leftfield.  From that point on Brandeis junior P Emily Vaillette (Milford, N.H./Milford) only allowed three Lasell batters to reach base in the final four innings to hold on for the 3-2 victory.

In the second game, the Judges produced a 6-0 lead in the first two innings which was all that Brandeis rookie P Caroline Miller (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) needed. She pitched six innings, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out nine and only walking two batters.  Miller got the victory and is now 4-1 on the season.

The Judges' offense had three players produce multi-hit games.  Brandeis rookie 1B Marianne Specker (So. Windsor, Conn./Westminster School) reached base three times on the day for the Judges.  She produced an RBI triple and an RBI single, with a walk and a run scored to go 2-for-3 at the plate.  Sophomore 2B Melisa Cagar (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base in the leadoff spot while junior SS Chelsea Korp (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) also produced a solid performance going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI single.

With the two victories today, the Judges climbed back to the .500 mark on the season.  They will look for another pair of victories as they visit Clark University on March 25 at 3:00 p.m.
