Softball downs Salve Regina, 7-3 and 9-0

NEWPORT, R.I.  (courtesy Salve Regina sports information)- Sophomore Melisa Cagar (Ridgewood, N.J.) went 5-for-7 with three runs scored and two RBI to lead Brandeis University to a doubleheader sweep of Salve Regina University in non-conference softball action Thursday afternoon at Toppa Field. The Judges (18-10) won game one, 7-3, and game two, 9-0.

The Seahawks (18-13-1) committed 11 errors on the afternoon - including eight in game one - which led to a total of 12 unearned runs. The two schools were tied at three entering the sixth inning in game one, but three Seahawks errors led to four unearned Brandeis runs. In the nighcap, the Seahawks trailed 3-0 before the Judges pushed across six runs in the top of the fifth - five of which were unearned - to take a commanding 9-0 lead. The game was mercy ruled following the completion of the fifth inning.

The Seahawks grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Senior Amaran Garbisch (Ghent, N.Y.) led off with a single and came around to score on an RBI groundout by freshman Kristen Parolise (Hamden, Conn.). Senior Caitlin Poplawski (New Britain, Conn.) was hit by a pitch following Garbisch's single and came around to score on a throwing error by sophomore first baseman Courtney Kelly (Leicester, Mass.).

Brandeis junior Chelsea Korp (Worcester, Mass.) singled and scored on a throwing error by Seahawk junior catcher Alicia Ferri (Pasadena, Calif.) in the fourth, but the Seahawks got the run back in the bottom half of the frame to take a 3-1 lead. Parolise struck out swinging but reached base when the ball snuck past the catcher. Following a strikeout by junior Sarah Jakiela (Meriden, Conn.), Parolise came all the way around to score on a throwing error by Brandeis freshman pitcher Caroline Miller (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.).

In the fifth, the Judges scored a pair of unearned runs on a fielding error by senior first baseman Katie Vieira (Dartmouth, Mass.) to take a 5-3 lead and capped the scoring with the four unearned runs in the sixth. Miller picked up the win to improve to 9-2 on the season, striking out 10 in six innings of work. Jakiela suffered the loss, allowing seven hits and five unearned runs while striking out 11 in 5.2 innings.

Cagar opened the scoring in game two with an RBI single in the first, and RBI hits by freshman Marianne Specker (South Windsor, Conn.) and sophomore Danielle Lavallee (Sutton, Mass.) gave the Judges a 3-0 lead before their fifth-inning outburst put the game out of reach. Korp and freshman Megan DeNubila (Princeton, Mass.) each scored twice for Brandeis in game two.

Junior Emily Vaillette (Milford, Conn.) picked up the win in game two to improve to 7-7 on the season. She allowed three hits and struck out six in five innings of work. Jakiela also took the loss in game two as she allowed six hits and three earned runs in four innings of work.
