WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University softball team was unable to salvage a series split with University Athletic Association leading Case Western Reserve today, as Spartan pitcher Kylie Hosey tossed a one-hitter to defeat the Judges, 7-0, to take three of four in the set. Brandeis falls to 20-14 overall, and 6-10 in the UAA. CWRU improves to 20-9, 12-3 UAA.

Hosey allowed just two base-runners all game, a lead-off walk in the first to grad student SS Jolie Fujita (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School), and a fourth-inning double by sophomore Alex Cohen (West Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School). Hosey struck out three and walked one, throwing 56 of her 87 pitches for strikes. She improved to 11-5 on the season.

Offensively, the Spartans had eight hits, four going for extra bases. Shortstop Isabella Russo led the attack, going 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. She had an RBI single to shortstop in the fifth inning and blasted a solo home run in the seventh. Third base/designated player Liv Thomas also homered in the seventh inning for the visitors.  Case's big inning came in the fourth when they scored four runs on five hits, including back-to-back run-producing doubles by 1B Grace Yeung and left fielder Carli Tucci.

Brandeis senior Sydney Goldman (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Notre Dame) took the loss in the circle. After a strong first three innings, she allowed four runs on four hits and two walks in the fourth. Goldman did strike out four CWRU batters to become the sixth player in school history to record 250 career Ks. She fell to 2-5 on the season. Cohen tossed three innings of relief, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out five, while first-year Madeline Gorey (Lake George, N.Y. / Lake George) retired the Spartans' last two batters.

Before the game, the Judges honored their seven departing players, members of the Class of 2022 and two class of 2021 graduate students, who have been responsible for 69 wins so far in their careers, making two NCAA tournament appearances:

The Judges are back in action next weekend with a four-game UAA series at NYU, starting on Friday, April 22, at 5 p.m.
