WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's
basketball team, ranked No. 12 in the nation by d3hoops.com, shot a
season-high 55 percent from the floor (28-51), placing three
starters in double figures as the Judges defeated the visiting
Emory University Eagles, 75-57, in University Athletic Association
action.
Brandeis (14-2, 5-2 UAA) fell behind early, 7-4, but the Judges
answered with a 19-4 streak over a stretch of eight minutes that
gave them a comfortable 23-11 lead on a lay-up by rookie forward
Lauren Orlando (Peabody, Mass.) with 9:29 left in the first half.
The Eagles got within eight points at 25-17 on consecutive
3-pointers by rookie guard Erica Kaplan (Commack, N.Y.), but the
hosts closed the first half on a 13-5 run and never looked
back.
The Judges were led once again by junior forward Caitlin Malcolm
(Windsor Locks, Conn.), who had 17 points to tie for game-high
honors. Malcolm hit six-of-10 from the floor, including a
3-pointer, and was four-of-six from the free-throw line. She also
polled down five rebounds and had a game-high three steals. Senior
center Christine Clancy (Yarmouth, Maine) and sophomore guard Jaime
Capra (Old Bridge, N.J.) both scored 13 points for Brandeis. Clancy
led all players with six rebounds, while Capra tied with junior
guard Alison Chase (Farmington, Conn.) to lead the Judges with five
assists. Brandeis owned a 35-25 rebounding advantage and outscored
the Eagles, 11-3, from the charity stripe.
Emory (12-6, 2-5 UAA) was unable to keep up momentum after its
Friday win over No. 9 NYU despite 17 points and a team-high five
rebounds rookie forward Lora Turner (Florence, Ala.). Turner hit
eight-of-10 shots from the floor and her only free-throw. Kaplan
was the only other Eagle player in double figures with 10 points.
Senior forward Lynn Oberschmidt (Cincinnati, Ohio) led all players
with six assists.
Brandeis and Emory will meet again in the next contest for both
teams in Atlanta next Friday evening at 6:00 p.m.
