WALTHAM, Mass. – Four Brandeis University players scored
in double figures tonight as the Judges, ranked No. 2 in the nation
by d3hoops.com, won their 10th straight game to start the season
and 13th in a row overall, 67-48, over MIT in Auerbach Arena.
Brandeis (10-0) was paced by senior Christine Clancy (Yarmouth,
Maine), whose game- and season-high 17 points included an 11-for-13
performance from the free throw line to go with three-of-seven from
the floor. The Judges also got career-highs from rookie forward
Amanda Wells (Loudon, N.H.), who recorded a double-double with 11
points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Also reaching double figures
for Brandeis were rookie Lauren Orlando (Peabody, Mass.), who
scored 14 points on six-of-eight shooting from the field in her
first career start, and classmate Lauren Goyette (Dartmouth,
Mass.), who also posted a career-high with 10 points. Brandeis
senior guard Amanda DeMartino (Toms River, N.J.) led al, players
with four assists.
MIT (3-6), who dropped their third straight contest, put two
players in double figures. Rookie Clara Yuan (San Jose, Calif.)
paced the Engineers with 11 points, hitting three-of-six
3-pointers, but missed six of her seven shots inside the arc.
Senior guard Karen Kinnaman (Woodstock, N.Y.) had 10 points,
hitting five-of-10 shots on the evening. Junior Cherelle Walls
(Memphis, Tenn.) and rookie Samantha O'Keefe (Carlisle, Mass.) tied
for team-high honors with six rebounds each.
Brandeis never trailed in the game, scoring the first six points
and opening up a 20-8 just under eight minutes into the contest.
After the Engineers scored the next basket, they never got closer
than 11 points the rest of the way. Brandeis shot 43 percent
(22-51) to MIT's 31 percent (21-68). The Judges also outrebounded
the visitors, 46-38, and outscored them by a 21-2 margin from the
free-throw line, offsetting the fact that they lost the turnover
battle, 17-16.
Brandeis is next in action on Saturday when they travel to NYU to
take on the 20th-ranked Violets in a University Athletic
Association (UAA) contest at 2:00 p.m., while MIT travels to
Worcester to take on WPI in a NEWMAC showdown at the same time.
