BOSTON, Mass. – Junior guard Jaime Capra (Old Bridge, N.J.) scored a career-high 33 points, one shy of a school record, to lead the Brandeis University women's basketball team past the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers, 90-66, in the first round of NCAA Division III women's basketball tournament tonight. With the win, the Judges will advance to face Emmanuel College, 80-67 winners over Salve Regina University, on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Emmanuel's Jean A. Yawkey Center.

Brandeis (20-5), ranked No. 17 in the nation by d3hoops.com, never trailed against the 21st-ranked Beavers (25-4). Capra was dominant in the first half, outscoring UMF on her own, 25-23. She hit 10-of-14 from the floor, including all four of her 3-point attempts, and her only free-throw attempt. Capra finished going 12-of-17 from the floor, four-for-four from beyond the arc and five-of-six from the line for the night to end up with 33 points, one shy of Pam Vaughn '90s school record. Capra also pulled down four rebounds and led all players with three steals.

The Judges put two other players in double figures. Junior guard Kiersten Holgash (Easton, Pa.) tallied a career-high 12 points on five-for-five shooting with a pair of 3-pointers, while sophomore forward Lauren Orlando (Peabody, Mass.) added 10 points. Senior Caitlin Malcolm (Windsor Locks, Conn.) added six points and a game- and season-high 11 rebounds. Four Brandeis players tied for team-high honors with four assists as the Judges had helpers on 21 of 35 field goals. The Judges hit a season-high 52.2 percent from the floor (35-67) while holding UMF below 40 percent (39.7%, 25-63).

Maine-Farmington was paced by 19 points and five rebounds by North Atlantic Conference Tournament MVP Kari Simpson (Wells, Maine). Simpson hit seven-of-16 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers, and three-of-six from the line. NAC Rookie of the Year Caitlin Laflin poured in 15 points on seven-of-17 shooting with a trifecta, while Stephanie Bossie (Winslow, Maine) finished with 11 points to lead all bench players. Three UMF players tied for team-high honors with five rebounds, while senior Karen Sirois (Augusta, Maine) led all players with five assists.

The Judges scored the first two baskets of the contest and jumped out to a 9-4 lead just over two minutes into the game. UMF scored the next two buckets to climb within 9-8 on a Bossie jumper. Capra answered with her second trifecta of the game, but the Beavers stayed close, trailing 22-16 with 9:30 left in the half. At that point, the Judges closed the half on a 27-7 run to take a 49-23 lead into the locker room and never looked back, leading by as many as 32 points in the second before taking home the 24-point victory.
