ATLANTA, Ga. -- Senior guard Jaime Capra scored a game-high 25
points as she connected on 12-of-13 free throws, including 5-of-6
in the final two minutes as the Brandeis University women's
basketball team (14-4, 5-2 UAA) rallied from a late deficit to
defeat host Emory University, 70-66.
Capra hit on just six-of-19 from the field, but her 12 points from
the line were key. She also had a game-high 9 rebounds and tied for
team-high honors with 6 assists. Junior Lauren Orlando scored 13
points in just 13 minutes because of foul trouble, connecting on
5-of-9 from the field. Junior Cassidy Dadaos scored 12 to round out
the double-figure scorers for the Judges. Senior Kiersten Holgash
matched Capra with 6 assists, while sophomore guard Jessica Chapin
had 4 steals.
Emory (9-9, 2-5 UAA) put four players in double figures as the
Eagles' 66 points were the most allowed by Brandeis this season.
Sophomore Whitney Martin led with 14 points off the bench,
connecting on 6-of-10 from the floor. Junior guard Kate Corkle
tallied 13, including two 3-pointers. Corkle and Martin tied for
team-high honors with 7 rebounds, while Lillard had a team-high 3
assists. The Eagles outshot Brandeis from the floor, 43%-38%, but
were done in at the free throw line, where the Judges owned an
86%-64% advantage.
Emory opened the game with a Corkle trifecta, but Brandeis answered
with a 13-3 run behind eight early points by Dadaos. The Judges
were ahead by as many as nine, 20-11, after a 3-ball from sophomore
Carmela Breslin 6:30 into the game. The Eagles answered with seven
straight, as Martin scored twice sandwiching a 3-pointer by junior
Kendall Boyd to climb back into the game, 20-18, at the 11:14 mark
Brandeis kept the hosts at bay, but were unable to pull away. Emory
finally reclaimed the lead, 29-28, on a Martin put-back. Breslin
connected again from downtown, as the Judges took a 35-33 lead into
the break.
In the second, the Judges opened strong again. They outscored
Emory, 15-6, over the first 5:38, taking a 50-39 lead on a Capra
jumper. They maintained the double-digit margin for another five
minutes, owning a 57-46 advantage on a Breslin put-back with 10:29
left to go. The Eagles' defense got them back in to the game at
that point, allowing Brandeis just two field goals the rest of the
way.
Over the next 6 minutes, Emory went on a 15-4 run. Turner had 7
points in the stretch, and a pair of Corkle free throws with 4:39
left tied the game 61-61. The Judges missed on their next
possession and Emory senior Kristen Brown hit a 3-pointer with the
shot clock running down to give the Eagles their first lead of the
second half, 64-61.
After the teams missed the next three shots, a key exchange
occurred. Orlando blocked a Corkle shot and grabbed the rebound.
Capra was able to draw a foul with 1:58 left. After hitting two
free throws, Capra was fouled while being boxed out on the second,
giving her two more. The senior connected, giving Brandeis a
four-point possession and a 65-64 lead. Emory missed on its first
attempt to regain the lead, but got an offensive rebound. Chapin
came to the rescue, collecting a steal with 1:36 left and feeding
Orlando for a lay-up to give Brandeis a three-point cushion.
Lillard answered for the Eagles with 0:56 on the clock, and Emory
was able to get a stop. With 19 seconds on the clock, however,
Chapin came up with another steal, and the Judges were able to win
the game from the free throw line.
