WALTHAM, Mass. – Four Brandeis University women's
basketball players scored in double figures as the Judges, ranked
No. 14 in the nation according to d3hoops.com, defeated Mount
Holyoke College, 77-38, in the opening round of the Brandeis
University Tip-Off Tournament. In the nightcap, Kenyon College
jumped out to a 17-6 lead and never trailed as the Ladies defeated
Wesleyan University, 64-54.
Brandeis (1-0) never trailed in the opener, either, as the Judges
jumped out to a 35-22 lead after the first half. The Judges then
opened the second half by scoring 22 of the first 26 points,
staking them to a 59-26 advantage with just 7:26 gone in the second
half, and they cruised from there.
The Judges were paced by sophomore guard Jessica Chapin (Mendon,
N.Y.), who scored 15 points on six-of-nine shooting, including
two-of-three 3-pointers. Junior forward Lauren Orlando (Peabody,
Mass.) had 12 points, including nine in the first half - the first
nine points of the game for the Judges - to lead all scorers.
Classmate Amanda Wells (Loudon, N.H.) had 11 points and three
offensive rebounds off the bench, while rookie Amber Strodthoff
(DePere, Wisc.) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points
in her collegiate debut, to go with a team-high six rebounds.
Senior Jaime Capra (Old Bridge, N.J.), though held to just six
points on one-of-seven shooting, managed to find her teammates for
a career-high-tying five assists.
Mount Holyoke (0-1) got an outstanding performance from sophomore
forward Jess Olson (Gilbert, Ariz.). She led all players with 19
points – half of the Lyons' scoring – and 13 rebounds.
Sophomore forward Kate Shafir (Newton, Mass.) had seven points on
three-of-three from the field with a trifecta. MHC committed 27
turnovers and shot just 28 percent from the floor (13-for-46),
while Brandeis hit on 48 percent (29-61) and made 10 fewer miscues.
