WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's
basketball team never trailed today as the Judges defeated visiting
Williams College, 75-56, in Red Auerbach Arena. The win was the
fifth in a row for the Judges, while snapping the Ephs' five-game
win streak.
Brandeis (7-2) had 3-pointers by senior Jaime Capra (Old Bridge,
N.J.) and sophomore Jessica Chapin (Mendon, N.Y.) on their first
three possessions and never looked back. They established a 15-5
lead with less than six minute gone on a lay-up by senior Kiersten
Holgash (Easton, Pa.). After Holgash connected from long range at
12:11 to give Brandeis a 20-10 lead, the Brandeis margin never fell
below 10 points again. The lead reached as many as 24 in the first
half as the Judges took a 45-24 lead into the locker room. The
margin was 29 at 57-28 on another Capra trifecta 5:05 into the
second and the hosts cruised from there to the 19-point
victory.
Brandeis was paced 25 points from Capra, a season-high. She had 13
points in the first half and 12 after the break. Capra shot
eight-of-17 from the field, including three-of-five from downtown,
and six-of-seven from the line. She also set a career-high with six
assists and grabbed five rebounds. Chapin finished with 16 points,
nine in the second half. She shot six-of-12 from the field and
four-of-six from beyond the arc and contributed six rebounds, five
assists and four steals. Junior forward Lauren Orlando (Peabody,
Mass.) had 13 points, 11 at halftime. Holgash and junior forward
Cassidy Dadaos (Healdsburg, Calif.) each finished with eight
points. Holgash matched Capra for game-high honors with six
assists, while Dadaos finished with a season-high seven rebounds.
For the game, the Judges shot 11-of-20 from 3-point range (55%) and
had 20 assists on 26 baskets.
Williams (6-3) got a double-double performance from rookie forward
Jessica Harris (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.), who scored 15 points and
grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, including nine on the offensive
glass.Harris hit six-of-10 from the field and three-of-five from
the line. Junior Mika Peterson (Los Altos, Calif.) also tallied 15
points, hitting six-of-12 from the field with three of her team's
five trifectas. Senior Niki Savageau (Marlborough, Mass.) led the
Ephs with five assists and four steals. Williams shot just 35
percent from the field (21-60), though they won the battle for the
boards, 39-38.
Brandeis has completed its first semester schedule and next takes
the court on Jan. 9, 2008, against Simmons College. Williams will
return to action at Lehman on December 29 at 12:00 p.m.
