Chapin named UAA and ECAC Player of the Week

WALTHAM, Mass. - Senior guard Jessica Chapin of Mendon. N.Y., has been as the women's basketball Player of the Week by the University Athletic Association (UAA) and as the New England Division III Player of the Week by the Eastern College Athletic Association (ECAC).

Chapin, who is being honored by the UAA for the second time in her career and by the ECAC for the first time, led the Judges to a 1-1 week. She averaged 27 points, six rebounds, 2.5 assists, and two steals over the course of the two contests. Chapin shot 43.6 percent from the field (17-for-39) and 45 percent from three-point range (9-for-20). In an 81-77 loss to the University of New England on Jan. 4, she scored 29 points and collected nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals. With five 3-pointers against the Nor'easters, she became the school's all-time leader with 139.

In the Judges' UAA opener on Jan. 9, Chapin registered a game-high 25 points with four more treys, including one with just over five minutes left that snapped a 57-57 tie and gave them the lead for good in a 73-68 win over New York University. The win was just the second all-time for Brandeis at NYU, snapping a five-game losing streak at the Violets' Coles Sports Center.

 With 54 points in the week, Chapin moved into seventh on the Judges' career scoring list with 1,071 points. She also has a place in Brandeis's career top 10 in steals (221, 3rd place) and assists (218, 8th) and, with 30 more rebounds can become the first played in Brandeis women's basketball history to reach the top 10 in all four categories. Chapin, a pre-season All-America selection by D3hoops.com, currently leads the team and is second in the UAA in scoring average (17.8 ppg) and steals (2.8 spg).

Overall, in head coach Carol Simon's 23rd season, the Judges are 8-3, 1-0 in the UAA. They have been ranked as high as ninth in the nation by D3hoops.com. They continue association road play this weekend at third-ranked Washington University on Friday evening and at the University of Chicago on Sunday afternoon.

Chapin is a 2006 graduate of Honeoye Falls-Lima High School. She is the daughter of Michael and Deborah Chapin, Mendon, N.Y.
