Cain named 2nd team All-UAA; Rodriguez, Dean honorable mention

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University sophomore guard Hannah Cain of Gloucester, Mass., has been named to the University Athletic Association (UAA) women's basketball All-Association second team. Additionally, junior guards Kasey Dean of Southbury, Conn., and Janelle Rodriguez of Peabody, Mass., were All-UAA honorable mentions.

      Cain finished second on the Judges in scoring, averaging 8.3 points per game. She also led the squad in rebounding (5.6 rpg) and steals (1.7 spg) was second in assists (2.3 apg) and 3-pointers (13). Cain led the Judges in scoring in six games this season, in rebounding 10 times and in assists seven times. She scored in double figures 12 times in 25 contests, including a career-high 17 points in a 62-57 loss to then-13th-ranked Washington University on Feb. 17. Cain started the season with Most Valuable Player honors at the Brandeis Invitational, helping the Judges to their first title since 2010.

      Dean was Brandeis's leader in scoring and assists this season, averaging 8.6 points and 2.4 helpers per game. She was second with 1.6 steals per game and fourth with 3.8 rebounds per contest. Dean led Brandeis in scoring nine times, assists 10 times and rebounding once. She had 12 games this season scoring in double figures, including back-to-back UAA contests in which she had 16 points, a 63-60 win over NYU on Jan. 5 and a 65-60 loss to Carnegie Mellon on Jan. 11. Dean also had a fine performance in a 62-49 win over Rochester on Feb. 3 when the Yellowjackets were leading the UAA. In that game, Dean had 10 points and a career-high five steals.

      Rodriguez, who missed the first two games of the season, averaged 6.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game overall in 2012-13, but improved those numbers to 7.9 points, 3.6 boards and 2.1 assists per game in UAA play. Rodriguez was the team's leading scorer three times, all in UAA play, while topping the squad in rebounding once and assists five times. Rodriguez's career game came on Feb. 15 in a 68-50 win over the University of Chicago, when her 22 points were Brandeis's season-high, coming on 8-of-12 from the field with four 3-pointers. She also had a career-best six assists in the contest.

      The Brandeis women's basketball team, under head coach Carol Simon, posted a 10-15 record, 4-10 in the UAA, good for sixth place. The Judges suffered more than half of their losses at the hands of NCAA tournament teams and knocked off a Rochester squad that was leading the UAA at the time. They finished second in the UAA and 94th in Division III in scoring defense, allowing just 55.5 points per game this season.

      Cain is a 2011 graduate of Gloucester High School. She is the daughter of Thomas and Holly Cain, Gloucester, Mass.

      Dean is a 2010 graduate of Pomperaug High School. She is the daughter of Chip and Kim Dean, Southbury, Conn.

      Rodriguez is a 2010 graduate of Peabody Veterans Memorial High School. She is the daughter of Jose and Marcy Rodriguez, Peabody, Mass.
