Jackson, Feller named UAA Athletes of the Week, Feb. 6

WALTHAM, Mass. — Brandeis University junior Liz Feller of Cortlandt Manor, N.Y., and senior Maria Jackson of Rochester, N.Y., have been selected as University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for women's fencing and women's basketball, respectively.

      Feller topped the Brandeis women's epee squad as the Judges competed in the Eric Sollee Invitational this weekend at MIT. She posted a 15-3 record for the Judges, going 3-0 against Stevens Tech (W, 16-11), Yeshiva (W, 25-2), Haverford (W, 20-7) and New Jersey Institute of Technology (W, 21-5). Feller also posted a 2-1 mark against UAA rival NYU (L, 9-18) and was 1-2 against Duke (L, 2-25), earning one of the team's two points. With 76 total wins this season, Feller leads all Brandeis women's fencers across all three weapons. The Judges are back in action on Feb. 11 at Farleigh Dickinson University.

      Jackson claimed UAA honors for the first time this season. She was also named to the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) weekly honor roll for the fourth time this season. Jackson paced the Judges to a 1-1 week against UAA opponents by averaging a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds per game on 50 percent shooting from the field. She also averaged 4.5 steals, 2.5 blocks and 1.5 assists per contest. In a 61-59 win over Emory on Friday evening, Jackson had a game and career-high 22 points and team-high eight rebounds, beating the buzzer on an offensive rebound to give the Judges a dramatic win. She also had three steals, two blocks and two assists. In a 77-65 loss to the University of Rochester, Jackson added her fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, along with a career-best six steals, three blocked shots and one assist.

      Overall this season, Jackson leads the Brandeis women's basketball team (11-9, 3-6 UAA) in scoring (13.2 points per game, 10th in the UAA) and rebounding (8.3 rebounds per game, 4th in the UAA). She also ranks fifth in the conference in blocks (20) and sixth in steals (40). The Judges travel to Carnegie Mellon and Case Western Reserve this weekend with games on Friday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
