PITTSBURGH, Pa. –- Senior Maria Jackson (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) had 19 points and six rebounds tonight, but cold shooting plagued the Brandeis University women's basketball team as they suffered a 74-56 road defeat at the hands of Carnegie Mellon in a University Athletic Association contest tonight. The Judges fall to 11-10, 3-7 in the UAA, while the Tartans improve to 16-5, 5-5 UAA.

CMU never trailed after scoring the game's first 10 points. The Tartans led 26-20 after one period as each team hit 10 field goals, but the hosts needed just 16 shots (62.5%) compared to 23 for Brandeis (43.5%). The Tartans extended their lead 43-30 at halftime and 52-42 after three quarters before the Judges outscored the hosts, 14-12, in the fourth for the 18-point final margin.

For the game, Jackson was one of three players to score in double figures for the Judges. She shot 8-of-13 from the field and 3-of-4 from the line. Senior Paris Hodges (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) and classmate Joelle MarkAnthony (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan) each scored 10 points. MarkAnthony's 10 points represented a career-high, coming in 21 minutes off the bench. The Judges shot just 30.3% from the field for the game (23-76), but were able to crash the glass to the tune of 28 offensive rebounds, accounting for 17 second-chance points. Jackson and classmate Sydney Sodine (New York, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) each finished with six boards, including four on the offensive glass. Junior Noel Hodges (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) had four assists.

Carnegie Mellon senior standout Lisa Murphy, the UAA and Division III's leading scorer, finished with 22 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocked shots. Three other Tartans finished in double-digits in scoring, with Makayla Filiere and Laurel Periera each tallying 13 and Katharine Higgins adding 12. Filiere also recorded a game-high six assists. The Tartans shot 50% for the game (28-56) and 39% (9-23) from 3-point range.

Brandeis will look to earn a split on the weekend in UAA play when they head to Cleveland for a 2:00 p.m. start at Case Western Reserve University.
