Women's basketball sinks Salem State Vikings, 68-48

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team won every quarter Tuesday evening, defeating the visiting Salem State University Vikings, 68-48, at Auerbach Arena. The Judges complete their November schedule with a 4-2 record, while the Vikings fall to 0-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first period went back and forth, with Brandeis eventually finishing ahead, 16-14. Salem State's Kia Fernandes stood out with 11 points, shooting a perfect 5-5 from the field, as well as adding two rebounds and a block.

  • The Judges were able to extend their lead to nine at the half, thanks in part to junior Joelle MarkAnthony's (Wallingford, Conn. / Mark T. Sheehan) six points in the second quarter.

  • The third quarter was a high-scoring affair, with the Judges outscoring the Vikings, 21-19, and leading 53-42. The Judges shot 43.8% (7-16) as a team in the period.

  • There was no hint of a comeback in the final period, as Brandeis held Salem State to only six points in the fourth quarter.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • The biggest difference in the game was each team's shooting: Brandeis shot 40.7% from the field (24-59), while Salem State shot 28.1% (18-64).

  • While the Vikings were far more accurate from the free throw line, shooting a perfect 100% to the Judges 61.5%, Brandeis had far more attempts, making 16 of 26 shots to Salem State's 9-9.

  • The Judges won the battle on the boards, out-rebounding Salem State 53-31.

  • Brandeis got a big boost from its bench, which outscored the Salem State bench, 30-16.

BRANDEIS LEADERS

  • The Judges had three players with double-digit point totals.

  • Sophomore Katie Goncalo (Fall River, Mass. / Tabor Acad.) tied her career-high with 18 points on 53.8% (7-13) shooting, including two three-pointers. She also added eight rebounds, the second-highest total for any players.

  • Junior Sarah Jaromin (East Greenbush, N.Y. / Columbia) came off the bench and set her career-high with 13 points.

  • MarkAnthony also set her career-high off the bench, contributing 11 points, as well as picking up five rebounds (four offensive).

  • Freshman Jillian Petrie (Marlborough, Mass. / Marlborough) hit double-digit rebounds for the first time in her young career, picking up ten boards to lead all players.

SALEM STATE LEADERS

  • Fernandes finished as the game's point leader, with 19 on 7-10 shooting, as well as a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line. She also led her team in both rebounds (six) and blocks (two).

  • Jes Brown was the only other Viking to reach double-digit points, with 10. She was also a veritable thief this evening, compiling six steals, four more than any other player.

  • Saran Kaba contributed in each of the five major categories, with four points, three rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block.

  • Brandeis returns to action next Monday, December 4, hosting rival Babson at 6 PM.

  • Salem State plays again on Thursday, November 30, this time at home against Mount Ida at at 7 PM.
