Women suffer 67-58 loss to CMU

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team was held scoreless for the final 4:55 of the game tonight as the visiting Carnegie Mellon University Tartans rallied for a 67-58 University Athletic Association victory in Red Auerbach Arena. With the loss, the Judges fall to 7-13 overall this season, 3-7 in the UAA, while CMU improves to 11-10, 2-8 UAA.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The teams played a defensive first half. The game was tied at 12 after one period and the Judges owned a slim 28-27 lead at the break.
• Brandeis got off to a hot start in the third quarter, scoring the first six points to take a 34-27 lead on a Hannah Nicholson (Sunderland, Vt./Burr and Burton Academy) lay-up at the 8:02 mark.
• CMU called a timeout after the bucket and scored the next four points of the game to get within three points.
• Brandeis sophomore Camila Casanueva (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos) hit a 3-pointer at the 5:59 mark of the third, but the Tartans' Makayla Filiere dialed long distance twice to knot the game at 37-37 less than a minute later.
• Brandeis answered with a 12-5 run to reestablish their seven-point advantage on a Maya Burris (San Francisco, Calif./Loomis Chaffee, Conn.) lay-up, but the visitors scored a late bucket to make it 49-44 in favor of the Judges after 3.
• The Judges were still ahead after two free throws from Lauren Rubinstein (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) made it 53-47 with 8:30 to go.
• Filiere scored the game's next two buckets, and Leah Weslock tied it up with 6:36 left in regulation.
• Brandeis senior Sarah Jaromin (E. Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) hit a 3-pointer to put the Judges back on top, but the visitors scored the next two baskets, taking their first lead of the second half on a Katie Higgins layup with 5:20 to go.
• The Judges responded when rookie Kerry Tanke (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) put back an offensive rebounds with 4:55 to go, but the Judges would not score again.
• Filiere hit a bucket on the next possession, and CMU held Brandeis 0-5 with three turnovers the rest of the way.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• Casanueva led the Judges with 12 points, including three 3-pointers. She also tied for game-high honors with five assists.
• Rubinstein added 11 points off the bench, scoring in double figures for the first time in nearly a month.
• Tanke added nine points and tied for team-high honors with seven rebounds with sophomore Samira Abdelrehim (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills).
• CMU got the bulk of its scoring from Filiere and Weslock, who combined for 39 points. Filiere had nine of her 23 in the fourth quarter, while Weslock had eight of her 16 in the final 10 minutes.
• Weslock also led the Tartans with eight rebounds, while Jenn Mayberger tied for game-high honors with five assists.
• Brandeis lost despite outrebounding CMU, 41-35, as the Tartans won the turnover battle, 22-13.
• The Tartans outshot the Judges, 39.7% (25-63) to 35.2% (19-54) for the game. The big shooting difference came in the fourth quarter, when CMU had a 50% (8-16) to 21.4% (3-14) advantage.

• The Judges close out the home portion of their schedule with a 2 p.m. contest on Sunday against Case Western Reserve University, before which they will honor their four seniors.
