Women end season with 64-58 loss at NYU

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team closed out its 2018-19 campaign today with a 64-58 defeat at the hands of rival New York University. The Judges end their season with a record of 7-17, 3-11 in the University Athletic Association, while the Violets improve to 14-10, 6-8 UAA.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Judges struggled offensively in the first half, shooting just 30.7% from the field (8-26), while NYU hit 45.8% (11-24), including 57.1% in the first quarter (8-14).
  • The Violets were ahead 20-13 after one period and increased their lead to 33-25 at the half.
  • Brandeis's Kat Puda (Whitinsville, Mass./Worcester Academy) scored eight first-quarter points to help keep the visitors in the game, but three different NYU players scored six each in the first, while fourth Violet had six in the second.
  • Though the Judges' offense clicked a little better in the third quarter, hitting 7-of-18 (38.9%) while holding NYU to 7-of-20 (35.0%), the Violets hit three 3-pointers and a pair of free throws to expand their lead to 52-39 with 10 minutes to go.  
  • Brandeis's offense picked up in the fourth quarter, outscoring NYU 19-12, but it was too little, too late.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • The Judges put two players in double figures in scoring. Sophomore guard Camila Casanueva (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos) finished with 10 points, eight coming in the second half, while also leading the team with seven rebounds and five assists.
  • Senior Sarah Jaromin (E. Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) also had 10 points in her final collegiate contest. She pulled down six boards and had three steals, a game- and season-best.
  • Sophomore Samira Abdelrehim (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills) added nine points and six boards, while junior Hannah Nicholson (Sunderland, Vt./Burr and Burton Academy) had eight and six.
  • NYU was paced by Lauren Koyama, who scored 17 points off the bench, hitting 5-of-11 from 3-point range.
  • Liv Linebarger added 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds, while Janeane Cuffee had 11 points and game-best six assists.
  • Brandeis outrebounded NYU, 40-32, but the Violets won the turnover battle, 13-10. The Judges did have a 13-12 edge in points off turnovers, however.
  • For the game NYU outshot Brandeis, 40.4% to 36.2%, and hit nine 3-pointers to five for the Judges.
  • The NYU bench outscored Brandeis 26-13, with Koyama outpacing the Judges reserves on her own.
