Casanueva earns UAA Player of the Week honors, Nov. 25

Camila Casanueva, UAA Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week

WALTHAM, Mass. – For the second time in her career, Brandeis University women's basketball junior guard Camila Casanueva of Santa Barbara, California, has been selected as the University Athletic Association Player of the Week.

Casanueva, who also landed on the New England Women's Basketball Association Honor Roll, was honored after averaging 22.5 points, 5.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game for the Judges in a 1-1 week. In an 83-63 road win at Roger Williams University on Nov. 19th, she had 13 points, five rebounds and a career-high nine assists in 27 minutes of action. On Nov. 23rd against Tufts, the #2-ranked team in Division III, Casanueva scored a career-high 32 points – hitting 11-of-20 from the field, 6-of-8 from 3-point range and 4-of-4 from the line. She scored 17 points in the first half, and after a scoreless third quarter, netted 15 of her 32 points in the fourth. That included two 3-pointers in the final three minutes of the contest that tied the game after the Jumbos had gone ahead. Tufts would convert six late free throws to take an 81-77 victory.

For the season, Casanueva is averaging 17.3 points and 3.8 assists per game, both ranked third in the UAA. She also grabs 5.0 rebounds per game. She entered the 2019-20 season as Brandeis's career leader in free-throw percentage and is 9-for-9 this season, putting her at 85.9 percent for her career. She averages 11.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists for her career.

Brandeis owns a 3-1 record in coach Carol Simon's 33rd season on the bench. The Judges return to action tonight, November 26, when they meet Salem State University at 6 p.m.

Casanueva is a 2017 graduate of Dos Pueblos High School.
