PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team was unable to complete a difficult weekend road sweep in the University Athletic Association today as the Judges dropped a 70-56 decision at Carnegie Mellon today. The Judges fall to 13-7 overall, 3-6 in the UAA. The Tartans improve to 10-10, 3-6 UAA.
Brandeis never led in the contest today as CMU came out on fire, shooting 53% from the field (8-15) and 71% from 3-point range (5-7) in the first quarter in taking a 22-13 lead. The Tartans hit a 3-pointer to open the second period and kept Brandeis at least nine points away for the rest of the stanza, giving them a 38-26 advantage at the break. A 7-2 run to open the third quarter helped the hosts go up by 17, and they never looked back.
CMU would go on to outshoot the Judges, 43% (29-68) to 35% (20-56) for the game, including hitting 50% (8-16) from beyond the arc, offsetting the Judges' 40% showing (6-15). The Tartans also had a 46-33 advantage on the boards and outscored the Judges, 17-9, in points off turnovers despite both teams committing 19 miscues.
Brandeis was led by junior Camila Casanueva (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos), who had 17 points on 6-of-13 from the field, 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and 2-of-2 from the line. Junior forward Jillian Petrie (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) added 12 points, while rookie Emma Reavis (Miami, Okla./Deerfield Academy) contributed 10. Senior forward Hannah Nicholson (Sunderland, Vt./Burr and Burton Academy) had team-highs with seven rebounds and three assists.
CMU was led by 19 points from Makayla Filiere, including three 3-pointers. Caitlyn Clendenin had 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists, tied for game-high. Leah Weslock recorded a double-double with 13 points and game-high 10 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass. She also matched Clendenin with four assists.
Brandeis returns to action next weekend as they continue a four-game road trip with contests at Rochester Friday evening at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at Emory.
