Brandeis women fall to CMU, 79-67, in UAA action

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team had four players score in double digits today, but they were outdone by a visiting Carnegie Mellon University squad that put all five starters in double figures in scoring today as the Tartans took a 79-67 University Athletic Association win in Red Auerbach Arena today.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis: 6-12, 1-6 UAA.
  • Carnegie Mellon, 10-8, 1-6 UAA.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Brandeis had the edge in the first quarter. The Judges opened up an early 18-7 lead and hung on to take an 18-13 advantage into the second after the visitors scored the last six points of the stanza.
  • The Tartans continued their run with the first six points of the second to take a 19-18 lead just under two minutes in.
  • The lead changed hands four times and there were two ties in the final eight minutes. With the game tied at 30-30, Carnegie Mellon closed on a 7-2 streak to take a five-point lead into the locker room.
  • The Tartans continued the run into the second half, scoring the first two buckets to open the lead to nine.
  • Brandeis closed to within one point on a Caitlin Gresko (Howell, N.J./Howell) 3-pointer with 1:53 to go that made it 49-48. CMU answered with the next five points to take a 54-48 lead into the final 10 minutes.
  • A 6-2 run to open the fourth extended the Tartans' lead to 10 points and the Judges would get no closer than five points the rest of the way.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Brandeis put four players in double figures in scoring, paced by Gresko's 15 points. Senior Emma Reavis (Miami, Okla./Deerfield Academy) and sophomore Lulu Ohm (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) each had 13 points, while sophomore Mollie Obar (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) had 10.
  • Ohm finished one point short of her career-high.
  • Reavis had seven rebounds, and senior Francesca Marchese (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy) had three assists.
  • Carnegie Mellon's five starters in double-digit scoring were paced by Catherine Or, who had 22 points and a game-high 23 rebounds.
  • Or finished one shy of the UAA record for total rebounds and set a new conference mark with 20 defensive boards.
  • Or's 23 rebounds were just six shy of the entire Brandeis team total.
  • Savannah Gibbs also had a double-double with 17 points and 12 boards.
  • Anisha Chintala (16 points), Megan Matsko (12 points) and Ava Black (10 points) also scored in double digits for the visitors.
  • CMU shot 50.8% from the field (31-61) compared to 33.3% for the Judges (25-75).
  • The Judges won the turnover battle, 23-11, and converted it into a 25-9 advantage in points off those miscues.

  • Brandeis and Carnegie Mellon will meet again in Pittsburgh next Sunday at 2 p.m. The Judges will take on Case Western Reserve next Friday night in Cleveland at 5:30 p.m.
