Powell and Larkin awarded UAA Athlete of the Week

WALTHAM, Mass. – Two Brandeis student-athletes have been selected as University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 21, 2011. Junior Alex Powell of Upper Montclair, N.J. and senior Emma Larkin of Montclair, N.J. were recognized for men and women's fencing.

Powell, posted a 7-1 mark at the 2011 Boston Beanpot Tournament to help the Judges to a second-place finish.  He finished 2-0 against Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 3-0 against Boston College, and 2-1 versus second-ranked Harvard University.  Brandeis defeated MIT 17-10, Boston College 14-13, and lost to Harvard 7-20. Powell leads the Judges' epee fencers with a 30-20 record this season.

Larkin, posted a 6-2 record at the Boston Beanpot Tournament to boost the team to a second-place finish.  Competing in the epee, she finished 2-0 against Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 3-0 versus Boston College, and 1-2 against third-ranked Harvard University, one of only five Brandeis victories against the Crimson. The Judges defeated both MIT and Boston College 15-12, and fell to Harvard 5-22.

Powell is a 2008 graduate of Montclair High School.

Larkin is a 2007 graduate of Montclair Kimberly Academy.
