WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University has produced three University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 13th. Senior Emily Bryson of Quincy, Massachusetts, was honored for women's indoor track and field, while senior Leon Rotenstein of Ashland, Massachusetts, and sophomore Madeleine Vibert of Las Vegas, Nevada, were honored for men's and women's fencing.
Bryson received the UAA Athlete of the Week honor for the fourth time in 2018-19 and the 17th time in her Brandeis career. She was honored for winning the 3,000-meter run at Brandeis's Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational on Saturday with a time of 9:56.97. Bryson defeated the next closest competitor by nearly one full minute. The mark was the third-fastest time in Division III so far this season and is a good bet to earn Bryson a trip to the NCAA Division III Championships. Last year, she won the Division III title in the event, becoming Brandeis's first national champion in nearly two decades.
Bryson and the Brandeis women's track and field compete at the Bowdoin Invitational this weekend.
Rotenstein and Vibert each earned UAA Fencer of the Week for the second time in their careers. Fencing at the Western Invitational at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Rotenstein put together a 10-2 record in saber for the men, going 2-1 in matches against Air Force and Stanford and 3-0 against Incarnate Word and Cal-San Diego. Vibert was 12-9 for the women's epee squad, posting a 3-0 mark against Florida and Caltech and a 2-1 records against Northwestern, Stanford and Incarnate Word. Overall at the meet, Brandeis won five of their 13 matches. The Judges swept Florida and Caltech, while the women defeated Incarnate Word.
The Judges return to action on Saturday, January 26, at the second of their two Northeast Fencing Conference meets.
Bryson is a 2015 graduate of North Quincy High School.
Rotenstein is a 2016 graduate of Ashland High School.
Vibert is a 2017 graduate of West Career and Technical Academy.
