Women drop three matches at Beanpot

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University fencing team hosted the 2019 edition of the Beanpot tournament tonight. The Judge men went 1-2 on the evening, while the women were 0-3. Harvard, whose women are ranked No. 2 in the nation by CollegeFencing360 and whose men are No. 5, won the meet. BC finished second, and MIT was third on the women's side, while Brandeis was third for the men.

BRANDEIS HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Judges had the closest of the three matches against Harvard on the men's side, picking up six wins against the Crimson. The Judges got two wins each against Harvard from junior sabre fencer Charles Catino (Bellvue, Wash./Hillside) and junior epee Chris Armstrong (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park).
  • On the women's side against Harvard, by senior Joanne Carminucci (Brewster, N.Y./North Salem) paced Brandeis's foil squad by going 3-0. The squad narrowly lost, 5-4.
  • In Round 2, Brandeis got on the board on the men's side with an 18-9 win over MIT, winning all three weapons. Junior Ian Quin (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) went 3-0 for the foil squad, while junior Sam Chestna (Middleboro, Mass./Homeschool) and sophomore Jared Sugarman (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) were each 2-1 as the squad went 7-2.
  • Other 2-1 marks for the men against the Engineers came from Armstrong and rookie Harrison Kaish (West Windsor, N.J. / West Windsor-Plainsboro North) in epee and senior Leon Rotenstein (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) and junior Shawn Pyatetsky (Fair Lawn, N.J/Fair Lawn) in sabre.
  • The women were edged despite also taking a 7-2 win in foil. Senior Renee Pite (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity Regional) went 3-0, while Carminucci and junior Hannah Mui (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solesbury) were each 2-1. The Judges lost sabre by the same 7-2 score despite late wins from junior Lupe Duran (San Antonio, Texas/Providence Catholic School) and rookie Jada Harrison (Jericho, N.Y./Jericho). Epee were edged, 5-4, to provide the margin of victory despite two more wins from Vibert.
  • In the final round of the day, the men nearly avenged an 18-9 loss to Boston College from the Northeast Conference meet, but the Eagles hung on for a 14-13 win. The Judges won epee, 6-3, but BC won foil by the same score, despite a 3-0 mark from Quin. In sabre, the visitors pulled out the 5-4 win to clinch the victory. Kaish went 3-0 to lead the epee squad, with Armstrong going 2-1.
  • The women dropped a 22-5 decision to BC, with Carminucci at 2-1 the only Judges with multiple wins.

  • The Brandeis women head to New Jersey this weekend for the FDU Invitational at Fairleigh Dickinson. Both teams return to action with the New England Collegiate Championships on March 2 at Wellesley.
