Morales claims third UAA Fencer of the Week honor, Jan. 13

WALTHAM, Mass. –  Brandeis University rookie sabre fencer Jessica Morales of Wilmington, Massachusetts, has been named University Athletic Association Fencer of the Week for the third time this season for her performance during the week ending January 12.  

Representing Colombia at the Sieber Grand Prix international event in Montreal this past weekend, Morales went 2-3 in pool play to finish in a tie for 83rd, advancing her to the direct elimination round of the tournament with the 68th seed. In the opening round, she defeated Leah Singleton-Comfort of the US, who fences at the United States Air Force Academy, by a 15-11 score. In the second round, she met Shihomi Fukushima of Japan, the fourth seed, and Morales picked up the upset, 15-14, to advance to the Round of 64 on the second day of competition. Against the second-ranked woman in the world, Olympic medalist Manon Brunet of France. Morales dropped a 15-9 decision to Brunet.

Brandeis Fencing teams is back in collegiate action on January 19th, 2020, at the Philadelphia Invitational at the University of Pennsylvania.

Morales is a 2019 graduate of Wilmington High School
