Fencing teams each post 4-2 record at second NFC meet

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Brandeis University fencing teams each went 4-2 at the second of two Northeast Fencing Conference meets of the season. The Judges dropped a pair of contests to the top two teams in the NFC this year. The women lost to both teams by a 16-11 score. The men dropped the closest of the four matches against Brown, 15-12, and fell to BC, 21-6. In their other varsity matches of the day, the Judges swept Vassar (18-9, men and women) in an NFC match and Drew (20-7 women; 18-9, men) in a non-league match.

The Brandeis women are now 13-10 overall, and finish 9-3 in the NFC, likely in third place. The men are 12-9, 7-3 in the NFC.

TOP INDIVIDUALS

  • Rookie Samantha Shortall (Norwell, Mass. / Norwell) led all Brandeis fencers with 13 wins against just one loss. She was 3-0 against BC, Tufts and Drew, 2-0 against Vassar and 2-1 against Brown.
  • Senior Jessica Gets (Morganville, NJ / Freehold Township) added 13 wins as well, against four losses. She went 3-0 against Tufts, Vassar and Drew and 2-1 against Dartmouth while also picking up a win each against BC and Brown.
  • Classmates Maggie Shealy (Chapel Hill, N.C. / E. Chapel Hill) and Jessica Morales (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) paced the sabre squad to a 6-0 record by posting winning records in nine of their 10 matchups. Shealy led the squad by going 11-3, including 3-0 against Brown and 2-1 against BC, Tufts and Drew. Morales was 3-0 against Vassar and Drew and 2-1 against Brown. (Dartmouth did not field a sabre squad).
  • The men were also led by the sabre squad, with sophomore Lucas Lin (Plano, Texas. / Plano West) posting a 9-3 record against the four varsity opponents, including a 3-0 mark against Brown and Vassar and 2-1 against Drew. Rookie Braden Vaccari (New York, N.Y. / Dwight School) was 12-6 overall, including 3-0 against the two club teams from Tufts and Dartmouth and 2-1 against Vassar and Drew.  
  • Senior Chris Armstrong (Highland Park, Ill. / Highland Park) paced the men's epee squad with nine wins, five coming against varsity opponents.

  • The Brandeis women play host to Tufts and Wellesley on Tuesday evening starting at 6 p.m., while both squads are in action next Saturday at home for the Eric Sollee Invitational.
