Fencers post 9-3 mark at first NFC Meet of season

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- In the first Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the 2021 season, the Brandeis fencing team posted a 9-3 overall record. The men went 4-1, while the women were 5-2. 

The Judges opened with a sweep of club squad Boston University, 23-4 for the men and 22-5 for the women. Against their first varsity opponent of the meet, the women dropped a 10-17 decision to Tufts. The men were awarded a 27-0 win over Tufts' club team.

After a sweep of UMass (M, 23-4; W, 20-7), the men dropped their only matchup of the meet against Sacred Heart, 15-12, while the women posted a 21-6 win. 

In a pair of showdowns with women's programs, the Judges defeated Smith, 21-6, but lost to Wellesley by the same score. 

Brandeis closed out the day by rolling over the club side from New Hampshire, 25-2 for the men and 27-0 for the women. 

The men's epee squad had the best weekend overall for the Judges, going 4-0, while the other two men's squads were each 3-1. On the women's side, all three squads matched the team's overall record at 5-2. 

Top individual performers, by squad, were: Men's Saber, first-year Tony Escueta (Grand Prairie, Texas / Abeka Home School Academy)(7-1); Men's Foil, junior Drew Miller (Seymour, Conn. / Metropolitan Business Academy) (7-0); and Men's Epee, sophomore Tal Kronrod (Concord, Mass./Concord Carlisle)(5-0); Women's Saber, junior Maggie Shealy (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) (16-2); Women's Foil first-year Alex McKee (Nyack, N.Y. / Nyack)(12-3) and Women's Epee first-year Calla Lee (Duluth, Ga. / Lambert)(13-7).
