WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's soccer
team scored the first goal on No. 16-ranked University of Rochester
in more than 450 minutes, but the visiting Yellowjackets answered
with just over two-and-a-half minutes left in regulation to escape
Waltham with a 2-1 University Athletic Association (UAA)
victory.
Rochester (7-1-1, 2-0 UAA) opened the scoring in the 29th minute,
as junior reserve midfielder Ashley Weagraff (Fulton, N.Y.)
one-timed a corner kick from the foot of senior back Kristen Leskow
(Endwell, N.Y.). UR dominated the remainder of the first half,
finishing with a 9-2 shooting advantage, but a pair of saves by
Judge sophomore netminder Betsey Medow (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.)
kept the hosts alive.
Brandeis (6-4-1, 1-1 UAA), facing the second of four straight
nationally-ranked foes, turned up the pressure in the second half.
In the 73rd minute, sophomore midfielder Lizzie Bremner (San
Rafael, Calif.) finally broke through, tapping home a ball that had
been sent towards the net by senior forward Lauren Gregor
(Holliston, Mass.). It was Bremner's second goal of the season.
After the Judges kept the pressure on UR reserve goalkeeper Molly
Leitch (Rocky River, Ohio) over the next 10 minutes, Weagraff
struck again with just 2:31 on the clock. After a Yellowjacket
corner kick, the ball was volleyed back and forth around the box.
It eventually settled on Weagraff's foot and she slid it into the
lower left corner to give UR its fourth straight win.
Medow finished with three saves for the Judges, as did Leitch for
Rochester. Starter Adrienne Hulchanski (Camillus, N.Y.) had one
stop for the visitors.
