WALTHAM, Mass. – One big save at each end of the field as a period was winding down meant that the Brandeis University and Springfield College women’s soccer teams had to settle for a 2-2 tie on a misty Gordon Field today.

Brandeis (3-1-1) sophomore Betsey Medow (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) came up big with 47 seconds left in regulation when she stopped a penalty kick off the foot of SC reserve midfielder Cari Capodiece (Berlin, Conn.). Springfield rookie Sue Jenney (Agawam, Mass.) responded with 10 seconds left in the second overtime period, thwarting a shot from just inside the box from Brandeis senior forward Lauren Gregor (Holliston, Mass.).

The Judges opened today’s scoring in the eighth minute, as junior forward Lisa Kaplin (Armonk, N.Y.) took a loose ball on the end line. She dribbled into the box and shot a rocket that went off Jenney and into the back of the net.

Springfield (3-1-2) answered with a nice set piece in the 28th minute. Standing about 20 yards from the net, senior back Courtney Goetz (Flemington, N.J.) put the ball on foot of sophomore forward Christine Turbitt (East Providence, R.I.), who one-timed it home for her fourth goal of the season, tying for the team lead. The Pride kept the momentum up through the rest of the half, but could not convert.

Kaplin gave the hosts the lead back in the 72nd minute when she headed in a rebound of a shot by Gregor. The Pride wasted little time in scoring the equalizer, as rookie midfielder Lauren Peltier (Agawam, Mass.) ran down a long ball in the 77th minute and scored her second of the year. Sophomore forward Nicole Hanewich (Cumberland, R.I.) picked up the assist. Brandeis ended the second half with 12 shots, but Jenney made saves on six of them. Medow had three saves in the second half, with none bigger than the penalty kick. SC had the better of the play in the first overtime and Brandeis in the second, but neither could break the deadlock.

For the game, Jenney finished with 12 saves for Springfield, while Medow had seven stops for the Judges.

Brandeis is next in action on Sept. 20 when they host Wellesley at 4:30 p.m., while the Pride travel to Amherst on Tuesday to wrap up a four-match road trip.
