SOMERVILLE, Mass. (taken from a Tufts University press release) – The Brandeis University women's soccer team lost by more than one goal for the first time this season, falling to the Tufts University Jumbos, the No. 7 team in the nation, 2-0, today.

The Jumbos (7-1) scored goals in both halves during a dominating performance against the Judges (6-3-1). In the 33rd minute, sophomore Martha Furtek (East Falmouth, MA) scored after a corner kick for a 1-0 lead. The margin stayed at one goal until 11 minutes remained in the second half when leading scorer Ariel Samuelson (Newton, MA) tallied her seventh of the season off a pass from Furtek.

The Jumbos controlled possession, finishing with 21 shots to three for Brandeis. However, the game wasn’t safely theirs until Samuelson’s goal. Tufts narrowly missed a goal earlier in the second half when senior Lydia Claudio (Woburn, MA) rifled a shot that struck the crossbar and angled down to hit the goal line seven minutes in. With Tufts keeping play in the Brandeis end without being able to score early in the second half, the game had the feel of a potential strike by the Judges quickly turning the tide and tying the game. Tufts didn’t let up though, and the result was Samuelson’s insurance goal.

The shutout victory was Tufts’ third of the season. Junior keeper Annie Ross (Newton, MA) had to make just one save to earn it. Brandeis sophomore Betsey Medow (Yorktown Heights, NY) finished with five saves. The loss for the Judges starts a brutal stretch in which they will play four consecutive teams ranked among the top 25 in the NCAA by the National Soccer Coaches Assocation of America.
