WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's soccer
team scored two second-half goals less than three minutes apart
today as the Judges rallied from a halftime deficit to defeat
visiting Bowdoin College, 2-1, on Gordon Field.
Brandeis (5-2) won its fifth straight match with the victory while
handing Bowdoin (2-2-2) its second straight loss. The Judges
defeated the Polar Bears for the first time in four meetings.
Bowdoin had much better of the play in the first half, outshooting
Brandeis by an 11-6 margin. It looked like the Polar Bears would
have nothing to show for the advantage until the final minute of
the half. With 26 seconds remaining before the horn, junior forward
Kat Whitley (Birmingham, Ala.) took advantage of a turnover deep in
the Brandeis zone and fed classmate Ann Ziegler (Washington, D.C.).
Ziegler sent a rocket from 20 yards out that went under the
crossbar for her team-leading third goal of the season.
Brandeis had the better of the play after the intermission, earning
seven shots to Bowdoin's four. The Judges scored the equalizer in
the 70th minute. Senior back Brittany Douglass (Tarzana, Calif.)
took a free kick just over the midfield line, sending it into the
box. Junior midfielder Sarah Jasak (Middletown. N.J.) ran it down
and put it past Bowdoin sophomore keeper Kelly Thomas (West
Hartford, Conn.) for her third goal of the season.
The Judges tallied the game winner just 175 seconds later. Rookie
midfielder Melissa Gorenkoff (Woodbury, N.Y.) slammed a ball from
about 30 yards out that Thomas couldn't handle. It was the first
collegiate goal of Gornekoff's career.
Sophomore netminder Amber Debole (Swampscott, Mass.) made three
saves Brandeis to earn her third win in a row. Junior Katherine
Popoff (Taipei, Taiwan) had five stops to keep the Judges off the
board in the first half, while Thomas had one save and suffered the
loss.
Brandeis is next in action with a non-conference match Tuesday at
Westfield State College at 7:00 p.m., while Bowdoin has a NESCAC
tilt against Amherst next Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
