NEWARK, N.J. -- The Brandeis University women's soccer team
scored a pair of first-half goals and made them stand up as the
Judges defeated rival New York University, 2-1, in the University
Athletic Association (UAA) regular-season finale for both teams at
the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
Brandeis (9-5-3, 2-2-3 UAA) opened the scoring in the 10th minute.
Junior midfielder Sarah Jasak (Middletown, N.J.) sent a ball to
rookie midfielder Melissa Gorenkoff (Woodbury, N.Y.). Gorenkoff
sent her trademark long-distance rocket to the left side of the net
from 20 yards out for her third goal of the season. The Judges
added an insurance goal at exactly the 37 minute mark, when senior
Melissa Gordon (Islip, N.Y.) collected a ball just outside the
Violet box and put it home for her first goal of the season.
NYU (6-10-1, 0-7 UAA) threatened to make a comeback when Jennifer
Tavares found Sarah Pillemer for a close-range goal in the 75th
minute, but the Judges held on in the contest's final 15 minutes.
Junior netminder Betsey Medow (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) made three
saves for the win, just one of which came after the Violets tallied
their goal.
