WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis University and Clark University
women's soccer teams battled to a 1-1 draw today in non-conference
action on Gordon Field.
Brandeis (3-1-1) opened the scoring in the 26th minute by taking
advantage of a Cougar turnover. Rookie Sofia Vallone (Westport,
Conn.) collected the ball and fired it home from 15 yards out for
her second goal of the season.
Clark (3-2-1) scored the equalizer on a similar play late in the
second half. Following a Brandeis turnover, Cougar rookie Kristen
Murrone (Middletown, Conn.) notched her second goal of the season.
It came in the 82nd minute when she blasted a ball just under the
crossbar and over the goalkeeper.
Both teams had outstanding opportunities in the overtime periods
thwarted by fine goalkeeping. Brandeis controlled play in the first
extra session, outshooting Clark 3-0. The Cougars had the best
opportunity in the second OT, but b Brandeis sophomore Hillary
Rosenzweig (Boca Raton, Fla.) deflected wide a shot by Cougar
senior Liz Adamcik (Florence, Mass.) with one hand. Clark sophomore
Joanna Clark (Windham, Maine) made a similar one-handed stop in the
final minute of play when she knocked Brandeis sophomore Melissa
Gorenkoff's (Woodbury, N.Y.) from 25 yards out off the
crossbar.
For the game, Brandeis owned an 18-8 advantage in shots and a 4-3
edge in corner kicks, though both teams had two corners in
overtime. Clark made seven saves for the visitors, while Rosenzweig
had three stops for the Judges.
Brandeis is next in action when they host Wellesley College on
Tuesday night at 7 p.m., while Clark hosts Union College the same
night at 6 p.m.
