Brandeis and Clark draw, 1-1, in women's soccer

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis University and Clark University women's soccer teams battled to a 1-1 draw today in non-conference action on Gordon Field.

Brandeis (3-1-1) opened the scoring in the 26th minute by taking advantage of a Cougar turnover. Rookie Sofia Vallone (Westport, Conn.) collected the ball and fired it home from 15 yards out for her second goal of the season.

Clark (3-2-1) scored the equalizer on a similar play late in the second half. Following a Brandeis turnover, Cougar rookie Kristen Murrone (Middletown, Conn.) notched her second goal of the season. It came in the 82nd minute when she blasted a ball just under the crossbar and over the goalkeeper.

Both teams had outstanding opportunities in the overtime periods thwarted by fine goalkeeping. Brandeis controlled play in the first extra session, outshooting Clark 3-0. The Cougars had the best opportunity in the second OT, but b Brandeis sophomore Hillary Rosenzweig (Boca Raton, Fla.) deflected wide a shot by Cougar senior Liz Adamcik (Florence, Mass.) with one hand. Clark sophomore Joanna Clark (Windham, Maine) made a similar one-handed stop in the final minute of play when she knocked Brandeis sophomore Melissa Gorenkoff's (Woodbury, N.Y.) from 25 yards out off the crossbar.

For the game, Brandeis owned an 18-8 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks, though both teams had two corners in overtime. Clark made seven saves for the visitors, while Rosenzweig had three stops for the Judges.

Brandeis is next in action when they host Wellesley College on Tuesday night at 7 p.m., while Clark hosts Union College the same night at 6 p.m.
