WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis University women's soccer team
got a pair of goals from rookie forward Tiffany Pacheco (Rehoboth,
Mass.) as the top-seeded Judges defeated No. 8 Emerson College,
3-0, in the opening round of the ECAC Division III New England
championships.
Brandeis (11-6-2) got all the scoring they would need in the 24th
minute. Sophomore midfielder Melissa Gorenkoff (Woodbury, N.J.)
took a pass from senior forward Tzlil Castel (Boston, Mass.) near
the goal-line in the right corner. Gorenkoff dribbled closer to the
box and curved a ball into the net for her eighth goal of the
season. The score tied her for the team lead this season.
The Judges added their second goal just under five minutes before
the half. Pacheco took a pass from classmate Taryn Martiniello
(Wilmington, Mass.) and dribbled past the goalkeeper, enabling her
to put the ball into the far side of the net. It was Pacheco's
third goal of the season. She added goal number four in the 76th
minute on an assist from Gorenkoff.
Emerson (13-5-4) sees its season come to an end despite a fine
performance by goalkeeper Katie Hartman, who kept her side in the
game with 16 saves, including 10 in the second half. Brandeis
outshot the Lions, 33-14, and owned a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks
for the match.
Brandeis will take on fifth-seeded MIT in the semifinals on
Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Judges defeated the Engineers,
3-2, in the season opener for both teams.
Pacheco scores twice to lead Brandeis women past Emerson, 3-0, in ECAC quarters
