Women’s Soccer defeats Roger Williams, 3-1, in first ever meeting

The women’s soccer team defeated Roger Williams University last Tuesday in the teams’ first ever match-up. The Judges traveled to Bayside Field looking for a win to vault them into conference play in the weekend to come.

The Hawks struck first as Sophomore Amanda daCunha (Wethersfield, Conn.) hit a laser from outside the penalty area into the upper corner of the net 16:37 into the first half. Sophomore Carey Baldwin (West Hartford, Conn.) picked up the assist. It wasn’t until 2:29 left in the half that Brandeis would even the score when senior co-captain Sarah Jasak (Middletown, NJ) headed home a cross from sophomore Melissa Gorenkoff (Woodbury, NY). It was Gorenkoff’s fourth assist on the season.

The Judges did not relent in the second half, scoring less than two minutes into the period. Freshman Sofia Vallone (Westport, Conn.) headed in her own goal for her third of the season giving Brandeis the lead for good. Freshman Kelly Cozzens (Lancaster, Mass.) picked up her first career assist on the goal. Jasak added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute to run her total to a team leading 19 points on the season.

Brandeis held the advantage throughout the game, out-shooting the Hawks 33-9. Sophomore goalkeepers Jen Garside (Londonderry, NH) and Jenny Schermerhorn (Sherborn, Mass.) combined for a total of 15 saves on the day while sophomore Hillary Rosenzweig picked up her eighth win of the season with three saves.
