WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis University women's soccer team battled visiting Carnegie Mellon University to scoreless draw today in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest on Gordon Field. The Judges move to 9-7-2 on the season, 2-3-1 in the league, while CMU goes to 8-5-3, 2-3-1 UAA. The teams are tied for fourth place in the conference with seven points.
Brandeis had the better play in the first half, outshooting the Tartans, 7-5. The Judges put two shots on goal in the 18th minute, one by sophomore Tiffany Pacheco (Rehoboth, Mass.) and another by rookie Izabella Miranda (Plymouth, Mass.). CMU sophomore goalkeeper Anya Rosen (La Canada, Calif.) stopped both attempts, as she did late in the stanza, making saves on the same two players.
Carnegie Mellon turned up their offense in the second half, earning an 11-7 shot margin, putting six shot on goal. Rookie goalkeeper Jacklyn Weinstein (Arcadia, Calif.) made four of her six saves in the second half. The Judges came up with a pair of big defensive saves. One was in the 77th minute, when rookie midfielder Francesca Shin (Bayside, N.Y.) cleared an attempt by CMU's Emily Overstreet (Camp Hill, Pa.) off the line. The other took place late in the contest, with just 13 seconds onthe clock. With Weinstein down after a collision with Tartan senior Abigail Coffin (Pittsburgh, Pa.), the defense again cleared the ball from in front of a wide open net.
In the overtime sessions, both teams got off four shots. The visitors had the better attempts, putting two shots on Brandeis's third-string goalie, rookie Elyse Phillips (Olney, Md.), who made saves on both.
For the game, the Tartans owned a 20-18 shooting advantage and a 5-1 margin in corner kicks, but Brandeis was unable to take advantage of CMU's 18 fouls to the Judges' six.The game marked the final regular-season home contest for senior back Meredith Milstein (Waterford, Mich.).
Brandeis wraps up regular-season play next Saturday morning when they take on NYU in New York in a UAA match.
