Women's soccer blanks Gordon, 1-0, in home opener

WALTHAM, Mass. - Sophomore forward Tiffany Pacheco (Rehoboth, Mass.) tallied her second goal of the season in the 38th minute today as the Brandeis University women's soccer team defeated Gordon College, 1-0, in the Judges' home opener.

After Brandeis (2-0) junior Melissa Gorenkoff (Woodbury, N.Y.) hit the post in the 23rd minute, the Judges finally broke through at the 37:13 mark. Rookie midfielder Kaitlin Oldfield (Raymond, N.H.), who had checked in moments before when a teammate left the field with an injury, chipped a ball over the defense. Pacheco was able to beat Gordon (0-2) junior netminder Abby Ytzen (Des Moines, Iowa) to the ball and knock it home for the game-winner.

Brandeis outshot Gordon, 10-2, in the second half, but Ytzen made five of her seven saves after the intermission to keep the Fighting Scots in the game. That included two stops on Pacheco shots in the 66th and 69th minutes.

Brandeis junior goalie Hillary Rosenzweig (Boca Raton, Fla.) made three stops to record her sixth-straight shutout, dating to last season.

The Judges are next in action on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. against UMass-Boston, while Gordon hosts the University of Southern Maine at 1 p.m. in their home opener on the same day.
