Late goal spoils Brandeis's upset bid of No. 15 Washington, 2-1

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (courtesy WashU sports information)– The 15th-ranked Washington University women's soccer team used a late goal today to fend off unranked Brandeis, 2-1, in a University Athletic Association contest at Francis Field.

Bear rookie Lee Ann Felder (Tucson, Ariz.) scored the game-winning goal on a diving header in the 85th minute. Felder, who took the team lead with her sixth goal of the season, headed home the cross from senior Caitlin Malone (Valparaiso, Ind. ) for her second game-winner of the campaign.

The Bears came out sluggish again for the second-straight game, but managed to outshoot Brandeis 7-2 in the first half. Washington University also had six corners in the first 45 minutes of play. Washington U. finally found the net in the 44th minute as rookie Emma Brown (St. Louis, Mo.) corralled a loose ball in front of the net and beat Brandeis junior goalkeeper Hillary Rosenzweig (Boca Raton, Fla.) with a shot to the far corner.

Brandeis (8-5-1, 2-2 UAA) knotted the score at 1-1 in the 73rd minute as junior back Abby Shields (Lancaster, Mass.) retrieved a long cross from sophomore forward Tiffany Pacheco (Rehoboth, Mass.) and settled at the back post, before firing a shot past senior Amanda Boe (Aurora, Ill.).

Boe picked up her 11th win of the season in the nets making two saves, while Rosenzweig made three stops in the losing effort.

Brandeis is next in action on Oct. 23 when they host Bowdoin College under the lights of Gordon Field at 7:00 p.m.
