Vallone scores twice as Judges blitz Simmons, 5-0

BOSTON, Mass. (from a Simmons College press release) -- The Brandeis University women's soccer team opened up a huge early lead today and coasted to a 5-0 non-conference victory at Simmons College. With the win, the Judges, ranked fourth in New England, improved to 6-1-1 on the season, while the Sharks fell back to .500 at 4-4-1.

Brandeis shocked the Sharks with four goals in the first six minutes;  two unassisted from senior forward Sofia Vallone (Westport, Conn./Staples), one unassisted by classmate Tiffany Pacheco (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional), and one headed in by junior forward Mimi Theodore (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) on a rebound from the Simmons keeper's save. The Judges' rookie reserve Annie Teece (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino) scored once more with 6:32 remaining in the first half to bring the score to 5-0, Brandeis advantage.

For Vallone, it marked her second-straight game with two goals and third of the season. She now leads the squad with eight goals this season, a career-high, as are her 17 points. Vallone is also tied for the University Athletic Association lead in goals scored. For Teece, it was the first goal of her collegiate career.

Simmons keeper Ashley Wheeler (Nashua, N.H.) was battered with 17 shots in the first half and made five saves, while backup goalie Ashley Donaghey (Framingham, Mass.) faced eight shots and also made five saves on the day.

Simmons will return to action on Wednesday, September 28, when they host GNAC foe Norwich at 7:00pm. Brandeis travels to Wellesley on Thursday Sept. 29 for a 4:00pm start time.
