PITTSBURGH, Pa. (information taken from a CMU press release) --  The Brandeis University women's soccer team suffered its first University Athletic Association (UAA) loss of the season today with a 1-0 loss at Carnegie Mellon. The winning goal came in overtime as the hosts scored on a penalty kick. With the loss, the Judges fall to 9-3-1 overall, 1-1-1 in the UAA. The 17th-ranked Tartans improve to 7-2-2, 1-1-1 UAA.

The winning goal was scored by CMU sophomore Louisa Pendergast (Snohomish, Wash./Glacier Peak). Classmate Allison McGugan (Chicago, Ill./Marist) was taken down in the box leading to the penalty kick by Pendergast. Junior Savina Reid (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) tossed a throw-in towards the box and McGugan's direction prior to the foul by a Brandeis defender.

The Tartans had the better of the opportunities in the first half with sophomore Carson Quiros (Atlanta, Ga./Whitefield Academy) having two shots saved, one by the Brandeis keeper and one by the team when she headed a corner kick toward the goal in the 43rd minute.

Both of Brandeis's first-half shots came in the first 15 minutes when junior back Emma Eddy's (Hinesburg, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) free kick went off the crossbar in the 10th minute and junior Sapir Edalati's (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) shot was saved by freshman keeper Katie Liston (Lakewood, Ohio/Montessori HS at University Circle) in the 15th minute.

Edalati had another shot saved by Liston in the 54th minute before Quiros put a shot on frame for the Tartans in the 55th minute.

Liston made her final save of the game in the 57th minute on a shot by junior forward Dara Spital (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and earned her third win of the year and first shutout. Brandeis junior Michelle Savuto (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) made three saves in the losing effort. 

Brandeis returns to action on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. when they travel to Emory to take on the 7th-ranked Eagles.
