WALTHAM, Mass. — Brandeis University women's soccer rookie forward Samantha Schwartz (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) assisted the first goal and scored the game-winner as the Judges defeated visiting Lasell College, 2-1, on Gordon Field today.

Brandeis (2-1) dominated the first half, outshooting Lasell (2-2), 9-0, but the Judges were not able to solve Laser senior Leah Pappalardo (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson), who made five saves in the first 45 minutes on five different Brandeis players.

A couple of early corner kicks in the second half led to some more chances for the Judges, but they finally broke through in the 66th minute. From the right sideline, Schwartz fed senior Sapir Edalati (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) at the top corner of the box. Pappalardo came out to try to challenge for the ball, but Edalati turned and fired into the net for her first goal of the season and the 19th of her career.

Three-and-a-half minutes after the goal, Lasell finally got their first attempt of the match, off the foot of senior Bridget Lynch (Dover, N.H./Dover). Brandeis senior Michelle Savuto (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) made the save, but the two would encounter each other again.

In the 78th minute, Lynch charged the Brandeis box as Savuto came off her line. Savuto reached the ball first, but her kick deflected off Lynch, who ran it down and poked it into the empty net for her fourth score of the campaign.

Less than five minutes after the equalizer, Schwartz tallied her game-winner. Junior forward Holly Szafran (Homewood, Ala./Newton North) played a terrific long through ball. Schwartz collected the ball, dribbled around one defender and blasted the ball past a diving Pappalardo at the 82:17 mark. It was the second game-winning goal of Schwartz's young career.

Pappalardo finished with eight saves for Lasell, while Savuto had one stop for the Judges to earn the win. Sophomore Alexis Grossman (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) did not have to make a save in her first collegiate start. The Judges outshot the Lasers, 24-2, for the game.

Brandeis returns to action on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Bridgewater State. Lasell is at Anna Maria a week from today at 11 a.m.
