#13/14 women's soccer pushes win streak to five with 1-0 victory at Babson

WELLESLEY, Mass. – For the second game in a row, senior Sam Volpe (Groton, Mass./Groton Academy) notched the game-winning goal as she lifted the visiting Brandeis University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Babson College this afternoon. The Judges – ranked No. 13 in Division III by the United Soccer Coaches and No. 14 by D3soccer.com – improve to 5-0 on the season, while the Beavers fall to 3-2-1 and see a four-match unbeaten streak snapped.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The game's lone score came on its last shot, as Volpe tallied an unassisted goal in the 90^th minute. With 43 seconds left to play, she beat a Babson defender and the goalkeeper to a loose ball at the top of the box and sent it into the wide open net.
• The goal was Volpe's second of her career, both coming in the last two games.
• The game was relatively evenly played across the board, and although the Judges owned a significant 15-4 advantage in shots taken, the margin was only 4-2 in shots on goal.
• Fouls were tied at 10-10, and corners were 3-all.
• Brandeis junior Sierra Dana (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) made two saves in the first half, while classmate Victoria Richardson (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) was untested in the second half but picked up her first collegiate win in the process.
• Babson netminder Kayla Salmon had three stops, all in the first half, in the losing effort.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

• This was the 44^th all-time meeting between the two schools, the most-played rivalry in Brandeis women's soccer history. The Judges improved to 23-18-3.
• Brandeis has won seven in a row in the series and nine of the last 10 meetings.
• The Judges have started 5-0 for the third time in four years and the fifth time since 2012.
• Babson had not lost a game in which they had allowed one or fewer goals in 16-straight games and had been victorious in their previous six home openers.
