PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Brandeis University women's soccer team bounced back from its first defeat of the season with an impressive road victory against another nationally-ranked University Athletic Association (UAA) team as the Judges defeated Carnegie Mellon, 2-0, with a pair of second-half goals. Brandeis – ranked No. 10 by the United Soccer Coaches and #13 by D3soccer.com – improves to 9-1 overall, 2-0-0 in the UAA. Carnegie Mellon (#12 United Soccer Coaches, #19 D3soccer.com) falls to 7-3-1, 0-2-0 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game was initially delayed by more than two hours because of lightning.
- After a scoreless first half in which Brandeis held a 5-3 edge in shots, the Judges struck twice in the second on similar types of shots.
- In the 52nd minute, sophomore Daria Bakhtiari (Wilmington, Mass./Central Catholic) unleashed a laser shot from just outside the left corner of the 18-yard box that hit off the left post and past CMU goalie Carolyn Botz. The goal briefly tied Bakhtiari for the team lead with four.
- Just under 10 minutes later, junior Katie Hayes (Eau Claire, Wisc./Regis) struck from 25 yards out, intercepting a Tartan pass and firing high into the upper 90 to double the lead. Hayes' goal reclaimed the team lead with five.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Judges ended up with a 10-6 shooting advantage, with a 5-3 edge in both halves, and a 7-3 margin in corner kicks.
- Brandeis junior Sierra Dana (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) made three saves for her second solo shutout of the season. It was her eighth career clean sheet.
- Botz had five stops in the losing effort.
NOTES FROM THE JUDGES BENCH
- Brandeis picked up its third win of the season against a ranked opponent, having defeated then-No. 14 MIT and then-No. 23 Tufts earlier this season.
- The Judges improved to 2-0-1 in their last three meetings with CMU, including their-second-straight win in Pittsburgh. Brandeis leads the all-time series, 12-10-5.
- Coupled with the men's 1-0 win in the opener of the UAA doubleheader, it marked the first time ever for a Brandeis soccer sweep on the road against Carnegie Mellon.

- The Judges close out the regular-season portion of their home schedule next weekend with two more UAA contests – Friday night at 7:30 p.m. against Rochester and Sunday afternoon against Emory at 1:30 p.m. for Senior Day.
