CHICAGO, Ill. – The Brandeis University women's soccer team picked up a huge University Athletic Association road win today as the Judges defeated the University of Chicago, 1-0, on a goal by senior Sam Volpe (Groton, Mass./Groton Academy). The Judges – ranked #13 in Division III by the United Soccer Coaches and #19 by D3soccer.com – improve to 12-3 overall, 4-2 in the UAA, while the Maroons – ranked #10 by the United Soccer Coaches and #5 by D3soccer.com – fall to 13-3-1, 4-2 UAA.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The teams played evenly in the first half, with shots equal at 8-all and a 4-3 edge in shots on goal for the Judges. Chicago had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks in the first half.
  • The second half proved to also be a back-and-forth affair until Brandeis broke through in the 70th minute. Rookie Lauren Mastandrea (Hauppage, N.Y./Hauppage) sent a terrific through-ball to Volpe. Volpe took a touch around the charging Chicago keeper and fired the ball into the open net for her third goal of the season. The assist was Mastandrea's team-leading fourth of the campaign, all coming in UAA contests.
  • Brandeis junior Sierra Dana (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East), playing in front of a home-town crowd, made three saves in the final six minutes to preserve the shutout.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • The Maroons also had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Dana improved to 11-3 on the season with six saves, the second-straight game she finished one shy of her season-best.
  • The shutout was Dana's fourth of the season and the 10th of her career.
  • Katie Donovan made four saves in the first half for Chicago, while Miranda Malone had five stops in the second half, but suffered her first loss to fall to 9-1-1.
  • Brandeis had not defeated Chicago since 2009, and had not won in the Windy City since 2008.
